OUR PROCESS

The history of wax carving is pivotal to jewelry making and stretches back 6,000 years.Unlike many ancient traditions that have been outsourced due to modern technology, for the most part, making jewelry is still labor-intensive requiring a keen eye and trained hands.

wax for carving rings It starts with a lump of jeweler’s wax (which is much harder than the kind of wax you might be familiar with from candles). It is sawed and filed in the same way as a sculptor works with stone and is a wonderful way to hone your skills with an affordable material.

What you’ll be doing

During our beginner’s course, you will:

  • Create a design of your scheduled class within your skillset.
  • Carve your wax.
  • Prepare your jewelry for casting.

Once you’re happy with your wax, you will leave it with us to cast on site in our state of the art casting operation.

Don’t worry, we won’t expect you to recreate Marie Antoinette’s necklace…at least, not right away.

As a participant, you’ll be following our step-by-step instructions for wax carving. The better you get at wax carving, the more complex classes will become available to you. This is a wonderful opportunity not only to learn how jewelry is made but to also create something completely unique. It’s also REALLY fun!

You can take your pick from classes focusing on any type of jewelry you are interested in making, like rings, bracelets, charms, earrings, and pendants. We’ll start you off with something stylish but fairly simple, and once your experience increases, you can sign up for more challenging project classes.

We’ll set a manageable schedule to learn more complex jewelry-making techniques as you go.
